Abstract

In this work, main publications by Giuseppe Gioeni (1747-1822), professor of Natural History at the University of Catania, are examined in light of their specific scientific contents and their short- and long-term impact on the international scientific community. This analysis suggests that some of the problems related to the production, communication and evaluation of the results of scientific research in the Enlightenment era are still pervasive in our society today.
