The manner as a Report by M.A. preceded the correspondence of the Accademia Gioenia with the Nuovi Lincei

Abstract

The booklet entitled Report on the solidification of animal substances is the first independent scientific contribution of a young gioenian fellow, the doctor Mario Aloisio (M.A.), just appointed correspondent, which is found in the magazine of the Accademia dei Nuovi Lincei Atti (1852-53). Alongside of its teratologic study interests, the Aloisio’s publication fits into the frame of the debate on the procedures, known or secret, used for embalming of corpses and preservation of organic tissues in the early nineteenth century. The procedure and chemical composition of the mixture used for solidification is not revealed inside, but a further study is promised to improve its effectiveness.
