The role of botanic gardens for the ex situ conservation

Abstract

The Author outlines the early Botanic gardens and the role they played. Then on outlines the functions of today's Botanic garden, listed on the year 2000, by the BGCI (Botanic Gardens Conservation International), in the Action Plan for the Botanic gardens of the European Union. Today the Botanic gardens particularly aim to reach the safeguard of plant resources and to contrast biodiversity reduction. Besides realizing seed banks the Botanical gardens should take at least 100 species into account, including rare an threatened species.
